The Roaring Fork begins high in the mountains near Independence Pass, gathering snowmelt from the Continental Divide before dropping more than 6,000 feet over 70 miles to meet the Colorado River at Glenwood Springs. Its name echoes its character—the Ute people called it “Thunder River,” inspired by the roar of its spring runoff.
At their confluence, two journeys become one. The Roaring Fork brings the cold, turbulent waters of the high country into the broad westward current of the Colorado, contributing as much as 12% of the Colorado River’s annual flow despite its watershed occupying less than half a percent of the entire basin.
